Tasting Notes

The Richard Lander Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020 from The Colonial Estate is an exceptional wine that showcases the richness and depth of one of the Barossa Valley’s most iconic sub-regions, the Moppa and Kalimna Vineyards. The vineyards, home to vines between 49 and 100 years old, are some of the oldest in the region, producing a Shiraz that is both concentrated and elegant. The grapes are harvested with extreme care, using green harvesting to ensure low yields of less than 3.0 tonnes per acre, resulting in exceptional quality fruit.

The 2020 vintage reveals a dense nose filled with red and black forest fruits, spicy plum, black cherry, dried fruits, and a touch of pepper, all of which hint at the richness and complexity that await on the palate. Fermented in small open-top fermenters and aged in French oak barrels, the wine evolves into a full-bodied Barossa Shiraz with a complex array of flavors. Upfront, it presents ripe plum, dark chocolate, dried figs, and leather saddle, while subtle notes of white pepper round out the profile.

The wine is supported by a firm tannin backbone, with sweet Shiraz fruit enveloping the structure, while hints of earth and acidity provide length and complexity. The finish is long and voluptuous, ensuring that the wine lingers beautifully on the palate. This Old Vine Shiraz from the Moppa region is an outstanding representation of the Barossa Valley’s best, and it will continue to develop with age, revealing further layers of complexity.

Rated 96 points by Winestate Magazine, 95 points and Gold Medal at the Wine Showcase Magazine, and 94 points from James Halliday, this Shiraz is a testament to the quality and longevity of the Barossa’s 100-year-old vines. James Halliday described the previous vintage as "A massively built full-bodied wine," cementing its status as a premium offering from one of Australia’s most renowned wine regions.

This wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, slow-cooked lamb, and matured cheeses, making it an ideal choice for special occasions or cellaring.
